Enabling communities

In our view, the role of education is that of an enabler and change agent for entire communities. Value created for the community at large is our ultimate goal. This can only be achieved through community participation, which makes the endeavour a sustainable one.

A truly remarkable example of this belief in action - educational initiatives impacting communities, is the Career Launcher Skill School project with the Rajasthan Mission on Livelihoods (RMoL). Apart from skill training this program also covers spoken English cum employment readiness, career grooming and courses in general education.

At CLEF, we follow two key principles to impact communities as a whole:

- Co-creation
This is central to the success of our project, from a design as well as a delivery perspective. Co-creation for us involves consultation with key opinion-makers of the village to discuss and finalise the strategic direction. And ensuring that everyone in the community is informed about the details and progress of the programs.

We do this through in depth engagement and focus group discussions among parents, community leaders, etc. inorder to engage them in the school set up- and therefore community development - process. The results from these discussions gives us valuable insights into their "triggers and barriers" and helps us understand what is relevant to the community as a whole.

- Convergence
The BoP Academy is envisioned as a partnership model wherein individual agencies or corporates pitch in to create content for capacity building programs that impact all stakeholders - the youth, the aged, housewives, etc. The academy anchors these programs and delivers them through the Community Enabling Centre (CEC).
Community Enabling Centre

Our vision is to transform each BoP school into a CEC - a hub of various educational initiatives that addresses the educational deficit of the surrounding community. The optimum use of available resources - primary school by day and CEC by night (school for all, across age and ability), goes a long way in adding to sustainability by further reducing running costs and making our model a viable one.

The desired impact is twofold:

- Training delivery to enable all stakeholders in the community.
- A center that becomes the stage for developmental change in the community.

Creating entrepreneurs

At the cusp of co-creation and convergence lies entrepreneurial leadership. Our model for BoP schools fosters entrepreneurship at the grassroots. We train and enable rural couples and young entrepreneurs to run the school themselves as an enterprise. We encourage budding rural enterprise by adding the much needed incentive required to run a sustainable school. This 'franchise' model works further to impact growth and scale.

Skill school

Our journey of change started almost two years ago. Among the various criticisms we heard back then, one of them was "Schools are uni-dimensional, they should simply teach children. "But we have come a long way since. Informal market feedback from our Andhra Pradesh locations clearly suggests a strong demand for training in several skills like English Speaking and Computer Literacy. We have already broken ground in these areas and are determined to carry out the integration of the BoP Academy with a skill school in most, if not all of our locations, during the current phase of development.
