Bridging the digital divide

Besides being an enabler and the best solution for access, a solid technology backbone is imperative for scale and penetration into the remotest communities. However, simply installing computer infrastructure in every classroom is of no use. We firmly believe that it is the appropriate use of technology that enhances delivery and helps to bridge the digital divide. Which is why laptops in the BoP classrooms come loaded with e-learning packages and training modules in vernacular languages, software that enhances productivity and communication amongst mentors and most importantly, are web-enabled with broadband!

Tech.Edu@Bop

Being firm believers in technology as an enabler, we have created a proprietary technology backbone that manages all processes and functions in the school using a web based platform. At the BoP Academy, technology is the support for content creation, storage and retrieval, communication between mentors, parents and students and smooth and efficient administration of the schools. IT-led design and delivery of the program ensures smoother operations in the day-to-day functioning of each school.

We use technology in the day-to-day running of the schools as easy as we would use chalk or a pencil. Some of the key areas are listed here:

Productivity and communication
- E-mail and Internet
- Digital reporting and documentation
- Photo documentation

Training and enabling
- Broadband enabled Spoken English training: part of our Information and Communication Technology package is SpeakEasy, a spoken English enhancement course. This highly effective module with nationally proven results consists of 47 digitized sessions, student work books and live conferencing sessions over Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol (VOIP)
- E-learning solutions for self learning, interactive modules and skill courses

Technology in the classroom

- Web resources for learning
- E-learning software in local languages

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

- Administration, enrollments, student information systems and notices
- Class attendance and assessments
- On line admission receipts printing

Academic processes

- Monthly micro-schedules and mentor resources (shared and updated centrally on the web)
- Monthly co-ordinator reports
- Parent interaction in English and local languages

Just as mobile phones have made inroads into all sections of society (not just the BoP) and are changing the way we live, in education too, the challenges is to leverage even that kind of technology for appropriate use. Once that is achieved, there is no limit to the scale at which this model at the BoP can work.
